Smart mapping: Detects each file’s supported transaction type and applies the appropriate default layout. You can review or change layouts after conversion.
Raw segments: Preserves the original EDI values and is not de-identified.
Obscure supported names, identifiers, and contact information in Smart Mapping output. Raw segments preserve the original EDI values.

How EDI conversion works

An EDI converter turns delimiter-based X12 content into rows and fields that can be reviewed and used in familiar tools. The application keeps file processing in the browser while giving you a choice between supported transaction-aware output and a direct segment-and-element view.

  1. Select an EDI file in the browser using the uploader above.
  2. Detect the format, including delimiters and the supported transaction type.
  3. Create output rows with Smart Mapping, or expose source segments and elements with Raw segments.
  4. Preview and review the converted rows and make supported preview edits.
  5. Export the result as CSV, Excel, JSON, or XML.

Convert EDI to CSV, Excel, JSON, or XML

Each output format is generated from the same current converted rows. Choosing CSV, Excel, JSON, or XML changes the output container, not Smart Mapping fidelity or supported transaction coverage.

Primary format

Convert EDI to CSV

CSV provides flat, tabular output for spreadsheet import and reporting. The EDI CSV converter supports both Smart Mapping and Raw segment rows. For multiple inputs, outputs can be grouped by compatible transaction type or kept per input. CSV is an export of the selected row representation, not a lossless reconstruction of the original X12 hierarchy.

Primary format

Convert EDI to Excel

Excel output is generated as an XLSX workbook in the browser, ready for spreadsheet filters, review, reconciliation, and handoff. Smart Mapping and Raw rows are both supported. When applicable, an 835 workbook can include additional normalized adjustment worksheets alongside the reviewed data.

Developer format

Convert EDI to JSON

JSON export serializes the current Smart Mapping or Raw row objects for development, integration, and automation workflows. The JSON EDI export is also generated locally in the browser.

Structured format

Convert EDI to XML

XML export serializes the same current Smart Mapping or Raw row representation into structured XML for integrations, middleware, and data exchange. The XML EDI export is generated locally in the browser. It does not reconstruct the original X12 hierarchy or claim compliance with an implementation-guide XML schema.

Smart Mapping vs Raw segments

Both converter modes can be previewed and exported, but they answer different needs.

Smart Mapping

Creates supported transaction-aware fields, labeled columns, and defined row structures. It is a bounded projection for documented transaction versions, not universal or exhaustive X12 interpretation.

Raw segments

Creates source-ordered segment and element rows for direct inspection or export. Raw preserves original source values and does not use the optional Smart Mapping de-identification transformations.

Supported EDI transactions

Transaction-aware Smart Mapping supports the documented implementation boundaries for these healthcare X12 families. Follow each link for the matching conversion workflow and output details.

Browser-local EDI conversion

EDI parsing, Smart Mapping, and CSV, XLSX, JSON, and XML generation occur in your browser. EDI file contents are not uploaded to or stored by the application server. Separate account, quota, privacy-safe analytics, and billing requests may use the network, but converter analytics do not include filenames, EDI controls, identifiers, source segments, or converted field values.

Optional de-identification is off by default and applies only to supported Smart Mapping transformations and related presentation surfaces. It is bounded rather than a promise to remove every possible sensitive value. Raw segments preserve source values.

EDI converter, parser, viewer, and validator

The converter is the upload-to-export workflow. Related tools answer narrower questions without replacing that conversion intent.

Converter vs parser

An EDI Parser interprets segments and elements into structured data. The EDI Converter exports that structured or Raw data into another usable format.

Converter vs viewer

The EDI Viewer is for direct file and segment inspection. The converter adds structured preview, editing, grouping, and downloadable output.

Converter vs validator

The EDI Validator applies enabled structural and transaction-specific checks. Conversion changes the representation and output format; it does not certify trading-partner acceptance.

Guest, Free, and Pro converter access

Guest and Free

Up to 3 successfully processed files per day are included for Guest and authenticated Free use. Failed, malformed, or unsupported attempts do not permanently consume the allowance. No account is required for Guest access. Smart Mapping, Raw segments, first-100-row preview editing, Compact Summary, and ordinary CSV, Excel, JSON, and XML exports are included.

Pro

Pro adds unlimited product processing, the full Data Editor/workspace, Full Analysis and drilldowns, saved layouts, and validation-report exports. It does not change conversion accuracy, Smart Mapping fidelity, output formats, or supported transaction families.

EDI converter frequently asked questions

What is an EDI converter?

An EDI converter reads an Electronic Data Interchange file, structures the supported data, and exports usable rows as CSV, Excel, JSON, or XML.

How do I convert an EDI file to CSV?

Select the EDI file, choose Smart Mapping or Raw segments, select Convert & Preview, review the rows, and choose CSV from the Download menu.

Can I convert EDI to Excel?

Yes. The converter generates an XLSX workbook in the browser from the same reviewed Smart Mapping or Raw rows available for CSV and JSON export.

Can I convert EDI to JSON or XML?

Yes. JSON and XML exports serialize the current structured or Raw row objects for integration and automation workflows.

Which EDI transaction types are supported?

Transaction-aware Smart Mapping supports documented versions of 835, 837P, 837I, 837D, 834, 270, 271, 277CA, 999, 850 Purchase Order, 855 Purchase Order Acknowledgment, 810 Invoice, 856 Ship Notice / Manifest, 940 Warehouse Shipping Order, 945 Warehouse Shipping Advice, 997 Functional Acknowledgment, 846 Inventory Inquiry/Advice, and 852 Product Activity Data. Other inputs can be inspected as source-ordered Raw rows.

What is the difference between Smart Mapping and Raw segments?

Smart Mapping creates supported transaction-aware fields and rows. Raw segments expose source-ordered segment and element rows and preserve original values. Both modes can be exported.

Is my EDI file uploaded to the server?

No. EDI parsing, Smart Mapping, and CSV, XLSX, JSON, and XML generation occur in the browser. EDI file contents are not uploaded to or stored by the application server.

What is the difference between an EDI converter and parser?

A parser interprets EDI segments and elements into structured data. A converter exports that structured or Raw data into another usable file format.

Can I use the EDI converter without an account?

Yes. Guest access includes up to 3 successfully processed files per day without an account. Failed, malformed, or unsupported attempts do not permanently consume the allowance.
