What Is an EDI 997 Functional Acknowledgment?

Understand syntax-processing evidence without turning it into a business outcome.

EDI 997 is the X12 Functional Acknowledgment transaction set. It reports how a receiving system processed the syntax of an X12 functional group and its transaction sets. Its codes are source-reported X12 acknowledgment status, not evidence of fulfillment, payment, delivery, approval, or another external business decision.

Who sends and receives a 997?

A system that receives an X12 functional group may return a 997 to the original sender. The acknowledgment points back to group and transaction controls so the sender can investigate syntax-processing status. Timing, whether AK2 detail is included, and whether a 997 or 999 is expected depend on the trading-partner agreement.

What AK1 through AK9 describe

AK1 identifies the acknowledged functional group. Each AK2 identifies an acknowledged transaction set. AK3 reports segment-level error evidence, and its child AK4 reports element-level detail. AK5 carries transaction-set acknowledgment status and syntax codes. AK9 carries functional-group acknowledgment status, source-reported counts, and group syntax codes.

997 and 999 are related but distinct

EDI 997 uses the standard acknowledgment grammar built around AK3, AK4, and AK5. EDI 999 is an Implementation Acknowledgment and uses IK3, optional CTX context, IK4, and IK5 for implementation-guide-oriented acknowledgment semantics. Their applicability depends on release, implementation convention, and trading-partner agreement; neither universally replaces the other in every context. See the EDI 999 reading guide.

Supported release identities

Public Smart Mapping recognizes generic 004010, 004030, and 005010, plus the 005010X230 997 convention. X231 and X231A1 are not advertised or treated as supported 997 implementations.

Common EDI 997 questions

Does an accepted 997 mean the order was accepted?

No. A 997 acknowledgment code reports syntax processing for the acknowledged X12 content. It does not prove purchase-order acceptance, shipment, payment, delivery, or another business outcome.

What is the difference between EDI 997 and EDI 999?

997 uses AK3, AK4, and AK5 acknowledgment structures. 999 uses IK3, optional CTX, IK4, and IK5 for implementation-acknowledgment detail. The required document depends on the release, convention, and partner agreement.
