What Is EDI 852 Product Activity Data?
A practical guide to source-reported product activity, inventory, and sales-movement evidence.
EDI 852 is the X12 Product Activity Data transaction set. XQ supplies report context, LIN identifies products, and each physical ZA reports one activity. Product-level QTY remains separate from ZA-owned activity QTY; SDQ supplies destination evidence; G95 owns performance-condition evidence and its dates; parties and references retain their physical scope.
852 and 846 overlap, but are not interchangeable
EDI 846 is direct Inventory Inquiry/Advice. EDI 852 supports broader product activity, inventory, and sales-movement reporting. Both may carry inventory-related evidence, but their purposes, structures, qualifiers, and partner agreements differ.
Who exchanges an EDI 852?
Retailers, distributors, suppliers, and other product-data partners may send or receive an 852 to report activity for an agreed period and location context. The trading-partner guide determines direction, cadence, activity codes, and required locations; the transaction alone does not prove how a recipient will use the report.
Related transactions have different jobs
An 850 places a purchase order; an 855 acknowledges an order; an 856 describes a shipment hierarchy; a 940 issues a warehouse shipping instruction; and a 945 reports source-reported warehouse shipping-advice evidence. An 852 performs none of those jobs.
What an 852 does not prove
An 852 does not independently prove actual sales, accurate or available inventory, demand, shortage, replenishment need, ATP, fulfillment readiness, accounting truth, or partner performance. Qualifier-grounded source evidence still requires business context.

Common EDI 852 questions
Does an 852 prove actual sales or available inventory?
No. Even when an exact qualifier labels a quantity as sold or available, the value remains source-reported evidence rather than an independently verified business fact.
Can an 852 determine demand or replenishment need?
Not by itself. Demand, shortage, sell-through, ATP, and replenishment require compatible data, business rules, time periods, and location context that generic mapping does not infer.
