Generic source validation
How to Validate an EDI 846 Inventory Inquiry/Advice
Review framing, release, requiredness, paired elements, ownership, and local syntax without inventing inventory conclusions.
Public 846 validation is source-local, release-aware, and sensitive-value-free. It combines shared X12 framing checks with the frozen generic 846 rule catalog for 004010, 004030, and 005010. Diagnostics retain bounded rule, severity, segment, element, pair, transaction, and source-index provenance without copying raw product IDs, quantities, locations, references, contacts, descriptions, marks, or proprietary codes.
What generic validation checks
- ISA/GS/ST/SE framing, exact ST01=846, control relationships, and release resolution.
- BIA requiredness and LIN ownership, including the required LIN product pair and incomplete optional qualifier/value pairs.
- QTY structure and companion semantics while preserving lexical quantities.
- SDQ destination/quantity pairs, including one-sided or malformed pairs under their physical owner.
- Physical SCH evidence, local dates, references, parties, contacts, descriptions, sublines, and other source-owned structures.
What validation deliberately does not do
The validator does not validate real inventory, certify inventory accuracy, infer availability or sellability, calculate shortage, surplus, ATP, or allocation, reconcile CTT to LIN, reconcile SDQ/SCH/QTY totals, certify a trading-partner implementation, or prove fulfillment readiness. A clean generic result is not partner certification.
Reports and the safe summary are different
Validation reports are available in CSV, XLSX, and JSON only—never validation XML. The edi-846-safe-summary-contract-v1 exposes structural counts and bounded qualifier, role, release, and validation distributions. It excludes raw identifiers, quantities, locations, references, contacts, PID text, mark text, proprietary codes, diagnostic facts, and remediation text.
Validate and investigate the report
Open the EDI Validator or review validation beside the Converter. Download the validation report as CSV, XLSX, or JSON, then use its source locations with the 846 reading guide and EDI 846 data map. Fixing a structural finding does not establish inventory accuracy or trading-partner acceptance.
